2003 Results
Thanks to everyone who made the Bear 100 a
roaring success in 2003!
Race Synopsis
It was once again a remarkable race. The smoke blew away
and the sky had nary a cloud in it all day and night long, with Orion looming
over the runners in the early hours on Saturday. It did get a little warm
during the day, but at night some runners wore only a light shell and no tights.
For the first time we had a little bit of ecoterrorism (or ATV terrorism?) with
flags being moved around, but most folks were only a little distracted by this.
Plans are already being made to avoid those problems in the future. A word to
the wise on this mountain course: carry your detailed maps and instructions!
We have invested a lot into making our maps hyperaccurate, and they, unlike
flags, cannot be moved around by bored local teenagers. The ham radio net
was wonderful! Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out, and we'll see
you next year at The Bear. Runners: please submit race reports and photos
for the 2003 reports page to
phil@phillowry.com. Thanks!
2003 Official Results (Splits
(note: some aid stations were missing splits))
(Please note: if you are using the Bear 100 for a
qualifying race, these results will not appear in Ultra Running magazine in time
for some events. You may print out the official results spreadsheet
and submit this as your proof of completion. Congratulations!)

*Rocky Mountain Grand Slam Winners (Completed Hardrock plus
three of the following four races: Bighorn, Wasatch, Leadville, or The Bear)
**Grand Slam Plus One (finished the Slam plus The Bear)
(5) Bear Streakers (Finished all five runnings of The Bear). A special
kudo also to Errol "The Rocket" Jones, who missed being a "Bear
Streaker" by finishing in 35:02 last year. He made this year 4 out of
5. Errol also volunteers much of his time to make the race a
success. We'll streak with you anytime you want, Rocketman.
